Kindergarten Program

Kindergarten is one of the most important years of your child’s entire education. During this year, students will lay the foundations for many habits that range from habits of mind to habits of behavior and relationships. Academically, students embark on the early stages of Math, English, and the other liberal arts. One could say that the trajectory of your child’s education is set by your student’s ability to read, to master mathematics, and to cultivate delight. Learning at this stage is driven by wonder in particular, so teachers need flexibility throughout the day to work with the grain of the students in their classes. Kindergarten teachers have the challenging job of melding order and wonder in their classrooms and outdoor activities, and they will often need to revisit lessons and adjust their plans throughout the week. To provide the best learning conditions for Kindergarten students at BCA, we offer only two enrollment options.

Kindergarten Full Day, 4-day or 5-day

Full day enrollment gives your child foundations in all of the liberal arts. Students will learn:

  • Singapore Math
  • Literacy Essentials* and Children’s Classic Literature
  • Bible
  • P.E.
  • Nature studies
  • History and Civics
  • Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork)
  • Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, crafting)

Kindergarten students will learn through play, song, stories, and chants. They will spend time outdoors and working with their hands. Students will engage in multi-sensory learning through the Singapore math and Literacy Essentials curricula, and through their Mechanical and Fine Arts lessons.

Fridays are for Fine Arts, Mechanical Arts, forest days, field trips, and House events.

Kindergarten Mornings, 4-day or 5-day

Half day enrollment ensures that your student receives instruction in:

  • Singapore Math
  • Literacy Essentials* and Children’s Classical Literature
  • P.E.
  • Nature Studies
  • Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork) OR Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, crafting) (WF)

Students enrolled in half days will need to review English and Math with their parents during the afternoons. This program is a good option for families that may transition their student to full time enrollment in later years, or for families that will continue with part time enrollment after Kindergarten.

Fridays are for math and English review, Fine Arts, Mechanical Arts, forest days, field trips, and House events.

Grammar 1-2 Program

Grammar 1 and Grammar 2 continue laying the foundations started in Kindergarten. Math and English require daily repetition of short lessons in the Singapore math and Literacy Essentials* curricula. Students begin a systematic science curriculum with stories, journaling, experiments, and nature studies. Lessons are wonder-driven, and students continue to learn through songs, chants, games, multi-sensory learning, hands on lessons, and outdoor time. Students continue practicing good habits of mind and behavior, and cultivating the intellectual virtues. Regular time outdoors, in free play, and in P.E. are essential parts of each day.

Full Day, 4-day or 5-day

Full day enrollment gives your child foundations in all of the liberal arts. Students will learn:

  • Singapore Math
  • Literacy Essentials* and Children’s Classic Literature
  • Bible
  • P.E.
  • Science
  • History and Civics
  • Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork)
  • Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, crafting)

Full time enrollment is the optimal option for families considering a K-12 education at BCA, and for families seeking to lay an excellent foundation for any future education after Grammar School. Full time students will have the benefit of consistent, daily work with their teachers in all subjects. This is crucial especially in Math and English. Your child will be able to participate regularly in the BCA House system, and will benefit from opportunities to serve, lead, and enjoy community.

  • Singapore Math
  • Literacy Essentials and Children’s Classical Literature
  • Science
  • P.E.
  • Nature Studies
  • Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork) OR Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, crafting)

This option is an excellent choice for families considering full time enrollment in older grades or for a robust supplement to home school education. Students enrolled in this option will receive essential training in Math, English, and Science, as well as robust lessons in either Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork) or Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, crafting). Students will also have daily P.E. and outdoor activities.

Fridays are for math and English review, Fine Arts, Mechanical Arts, forest days, field trips, and House events.

Grammar 3-6 Program

Grammar 3 through Grammar 6 continue the wonder-driven education begun in Kindergarten. Students have completed Literacy Essentials* and move on to explicit grammar instruction alongside classic literature by authors like E. B. White, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Rosemary Sutcliffe, and William Shakespeare. Students continue through Singapore math curriculum, along with their science studies. In Grammar 3, they will also begin daily Latin lessons. In all of their lessons, students learn through songs, living history, games, multi-sensory learning, hands on lessons, and outdoor time. Students continue practicing good habits of mind and behavior, and cultivating the intellectual virtues. Classes will also begin incorporating formal letter and number grades in preparation for the Logic years, but students will not receive a transcript with a GPA.

Full Day, 4-day or 5-day

Full time enrollment includes full lessons in all of the following:

  • Singapore Math
  • English Language and Classic Literature
  • Science
  • History, and Civics
  • P.E.
  • Bible
  • Latin
  • Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork)
  • Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, drama)

Full time enrollment is the best option for families considering a K-12 education at BCA, and for families seeking to lay an excellent foundation for any future education after Grammar School. Full time students will have the benefit of consistent, daily work with their teachers in all subjects. This is crucial especially in Math and English. Full Day, MTR

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday enrollment includes the following:

  • Singapore Math
  • English Language and Classic Literature
  • Science
  • Bible
  • Latin
  • P.E.

This is a good choice for families considering full time enrollment in older grades, or a robust supplement to home school education. The 3-day enrollment option covers the cornerstones of the liberal arts and provides students opportunities to participate in community and receive attention from their teachers in the core subjects.

Full Day, WF

Wednesday, Friday enrollment includes the following:

  • Mechanical Arts (e.g. gardening, outdoor skills, handwork)
  • Fine Arts (e.g. music, drawing, crafting)
  • Bible
  • Latin
  • P.E.
  • Self-directed reading and study time

This is a good option for families wishing to supplement a robust home school education. It is not a good option for families seeking to enroll their students full time at BCA in the future, or for families who may switch their students to the MTR liberal arts enrollment option. Families may wish to coordinate their Math, English, Science, and History at home so that their students get the most out of Mechanical and Fine Arts themes, but this is not required. In addition to the hands-on classes, students will take lessons in P.E., Latin, and Bible.

Fridays are for math and English review, Fine Arts, Mechanical Arts, forest days, field trips, and House events.

Note for Parents of Part Time Students

We invite full time and part time students to join us at Bonner Classical Academy. So that all students flourish in our academic programs, we require parents of part time students commit to minimal review time outside of class in a few of the more challenging subjects. To support parents in this responsibility, we will arrange subject-specific orientations for parents at the beginning of the school year. During the school year, teachers will share a review guide each week to assist parents in reviewing the subjects below with their students. Parents will not be responsible for introducing new material to their students, and time spent in outside review exercises is not calculated as homework in the BCA Standard.

Parents are free to select and teach their own curriculum for any subjects their students are not enrolled in at Bonner Classical.

Kindergarten through Grammar 2 Literacy Essentials

Students enrolled in the mornings and in 4-day weeks will need to review lessons and do some reading exercises in the afternoons and/or on Friday.

Singapore Math

Students enrolled in mornings, 4-day weeks, or in the Grammar 3-6 MTR option will need to review math with their parents in the afternoons or on Wednesday and Friday.

Grammar 3-6 Latin

Students enrolled in the mornings, 4-day weeks, or in the Grammar 3-6 MTR option will need to review Latin with their parents in the afternoons or on Wednesday and Friday.
